IL PAESE DOVE NON SI MUORE MAI

 - ITALIA

Il Paese dove non si muore mai (The country where no one ever dies)

(Dëkk bu kënn dull dëwee)

Crossing a fairy tale from Italo Calvino to Italo Senegalese. This is a theatrical creation based on Italo Calvino’s Il paese dove non si muore mai (The Country Where You Never Die), a show in the vein of Albe’s theatrical fusion, the poetic root of the company since the late 1980s, created thanks to the collaboration with Teatro Caverna, which worked alongside Mandiaye N’Diaye between 2012 and 2014 to create Opera Lamb. In this Afro-Italian fusion, the story unfolds through the figure of a young “tubab” (a Senegalese term for “white people”) who, refusing to accept death, decides to embark on a journey to the country that gives the fairy tale its title. On her journey, the young woman meets unusual sages who, between moments of hilarity and others of melancholic poetry, offer her alternatives for longevity. These wise men come from “another world”, which is Africa, but also Elsewhere because, like any self-respecting fairy tale, it takes place in the time of dreams, which is a bridge between the world and stories. Because the fear that unites us all is one: the one we often cannot even name. Il Paese dove non si muore mai (The Country Where You Never Die) debuts after the excellent reception of the previous show Thioro. A Senegalese Little Red Riding Hood, 500 performances in Italy, winner of the 2019 Eolo Award for Best Production. A co-production by Albe/Ravenna Teatro – Teatro Caverna – Ker Theatre Mandiaye N’Diaye, made possible thanks to an artistic residency by Olinda/TeatroLaCucina and with the support of Bergamo Brescia 2023 Italian Capital of Culture and the Italian Cultural Institute in Dakar.
