Stage fighting is also a way to come closer to yourself – to discover sides of you that perhaps were hidden from you. Mastering stage combat gives you a sense of mastering your own life to.
“It is my experience that stage combat is a very good way to really get to know each other well and to find new ways of collaborating. Safety is the number one rule in stage combat, it is therefore important to create a safe space when working with fights”, Lien says.
“I always treat movement, whether it is for fights or other movement choreography, as you would treat text. It needs to have an organic process in how it is initiated, acted out and resolved.
My experience as an actor and director myself, has given me valuable insights into who to work with fight choreography that makes the actors feel safe and really know what they are doing – fights are a lot more than just doing the choreography right.”
