Do you know Andersen’s fairy tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes”? That’s where the phrase “the king is naked” comes from! …and this fairy tale is also the inspiration for this show, which is light-hearted, entertaining and engaging, yet at the same time merciless and grotesque. Hopping from one character to another, Alessandro Lucci weaves the story of the king who was deceived and who involved his entire kingdom in this deception… Perhaps because he was a naive king, or because power involves and feeds on those around it? Or perhaps because exchanging one’s power, however small, for freedom is a bargain that is very frightening? Perhaps it was because he was a naive king, or because power involves and feeds on those around it? Or maybe because trading one’s power, no matter how small, for freedom is a barter that brings so much fear?
Lots of questions for a show that is dark, sometimes bizarre, but always accessible to everyone, offering a look at the world and the ways an entire society can be held in check, for better or for worse. Only a child will shout in the crowd, “The king is naked!” trying to overturn all of this… will he succeed? The audience will be the judge!
